Jasim Alam graduated from IIFM (2014 - 2016 batch) and is currently working as an Area Manager in a Microfinance firm. Jasim served as the Coordinator of Climate Change and Environment Core Competency Cell, IIFM.
Established in 1982 as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India, IIFM was conceptualized in response to the recommendations of the National Commission on Agriculture for better management of forest and its allied sector by management graduates. But for me, IIFM is a misnomer. It should be renamed as either Indian Institute of Natural Resource Management or Indian Institute of Sustainable Management because we are thoroughly taught on these subjects from conservation as well as development perspectives to develop a holistic understanding of the critical issues related to the natural resource. The course curriculum of IIFM is very unique. It contains all the general management studies. In addition to this, it gives students an opportunity to specialize in any of the following three areas: Environmental Management, Developmental Management and Conservation& Livelihood which gives us a competitive advantage to perform efficiently and effectively in both corporate as well as social sectors. We have a strong alumni network which works as a backbone for the placement process. Our alumni are doing extremely well in the fields of Banking & Finance, Microfinance, Research& Consultancy, Wildlife& Conservation, Rural Development & Livelihood, Corporate Sustainability, Corporate Responsibility, Eco-Tourism, Business Development and Marketing, Social Entrepreneurship etc. In other words, we not only have the capability to encroach into the core management sector but also have our own niche of social expertise.
All applicants desirous of seeking admission in PGDFM at IIFM have to appear for Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) or have to appear for Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) conducted by XLRI. IIFM will use the CAT/XAT score (Cutoffs are usually around 80 percentile for General candidates) for short-listing the candidates for calling for GD/PI.
The USP of IIFM lies in its esteemed and experienced highly qualified faculty members. They have a thorough understanding of their subjects with intensive field and practical exposure. Available at any hour of the day, they help us not only built a management career but also a personal character.
Life at IIFM is thrilling and exciting .Situated on a hillock in the city of lakes with a spread of 230 acres, surrounded by water bodies on three sides, the lush green campus with its beautiful flora and fauna gives a perfect ambiance and serene environment to explore oneself in diverse ways for the responsibilities and opportunities ahead. It’s said that IIFM never sleeps. The extensive field visits help one to explore his core competency and decide which sector he’s willing to make his career path.
It has six different clubs which conduct internal activities and events day in day out. Additionally, it has three important cells which conduct annual conclaves at the national level. The motto of clubs and cells, all run by the student body, is to make the lives of IIFmites interesting and busy. We also have a cooperative mess run by the student body at quarterly basis. The weekly menu, quarterly mess fee, quality assessment of the food are some the many responsibilities of the Mess Committee.
Placement is undoubtedly 100% with students getting placed in all the major organizations encompassing the three above stated specializations.ROI is relatively high as compared to other B School; IIFM has one of lowest admission fee structure. The best part of IIFM is that it not only provides placement but also a career path to achieve one goal. Additionally, IIFM has added one more feather in its cap: It has ranked 8th among 'Top 50 Management Institutes for Research and Teaching' in India by National Institutional Ranking Framework (MHRD) in 2016.
